There are many wonderful items to be had for free, which will greatly enhance your experience in SL, and probably just as many different ways to obtain them! LOL!
From appearance enhancing items i.e. skins, shapes, hair, clothing (and all related items) tattoos, animations, AO’s and the list goes on and on; to homes, furniture, vehicles, building tools, again, the list goes on and on. I will attempt to share with you those which I have personally discovered and used. Be warned that the fun to be had obtaining these items is equally yoked with the task of opening, fitting, organizing and cleaning up after yourself, and trust me, at the speed at which these add up, it can become an unmaneagable behemoth before you realize it! I should know, my inventory seems a veritable and unfathombale black hole! ROFL!!!
Following are some of these forms to obatin free items (better known is SL as ‘freebies’):
1) Group Promotions/Subscribos: These are gifts you receive by becoming a member of a specific group within SL, and/or subscribing to them through a store subscribo terminal.
2) Hunts: Ever been on a Treasure Hunt? Well, that is what these are, set up and sponsored by the many vendors/creators/sim owners in SL to promote and and increase foot traffic through their stores or sims. The premise is very simple for the most part; You are provided with a ‘starting point’ link where you go to receive your first free item as well as a link to where the next item in the hunt may be found. You go along following these links and picking up treasures as you go! It is that simple…and easy to push the bulging limits of your inventory to near catastrophic conditions! LMAO! Most sims or stores you visit have voting kiosks, it would be very nice, as well as a sign of good faith and gratitude (in my humble opinion), to hit these kiosks with your vote.
3) Lucky Chairs/Boards: These are terminals which randomly call out a letter or number, and the person who’s name begins with that letter/number called sits on or clicks the terminal to receive the gift displayed near, on, or next to the terminal.
4) Lucky & Un-lucky Dips: Yes, you read it right..(giggles) hey! If it means cool freebies, I don’t care whether I have to sit in or on it, or whether I have to stick my hand in a pit of colorful balls, or a vat of gooey blood (uugghhhh), or dip into a barrel and bob for apples. Be warned, these also give out random boobie prizes as well as any promotional item pictured.
5) Midnight Mania Boards: These are terminals which have a preset target to be reached by clicks in order to obtain the item offered on the board; if the target is reached before midnight, all those who clicked on the board will receive the item offered free of charge.
6) Cupcakes: Yes, cupcakes…Yummy looking humongous cupcakes you get hog… I mean, hug, and when you take a bite into it you will get one of the following: a frosted cupcake, a random boobie prize, or the top promotional prize.
7) DSN (Designer Showcase Network) – DSN is a subscription based network which gives out samples of products from the many content designers within SL, and which are delivered directly to you. You go to a DSN kiosk and click it to open the channel menu, there you can choose as many of the channels you are interested in receiving samples from. There are 9 channels to choose from: Accesories, Avatars, Animations, Female Fashion, Gadgets, Home Decor, Male Fashions, Tools (Business tools & services), and Skin/Hair.
